I chose to focus my research and practice on heart rhythm problems, because these problems, unlike many other heart conditions, can be cured. New treatment options for heart rhythm problems are rapidly evolving, which also makes this field very exciting. I have been at Duke for nearly 20 years. Both of my parents were involved in health care, so my choice of profession is part of a family tradition. I also went to a school where there was a strong tradition of community service, so I am thrilled that I get to wake up every day and get a chance to make a difference. As a heart rhythm specialist, I have the opportunity to make patients feel better right away without the use of many medications to help manage their condition, which I find extremely gratifying. I moved to North Carolina many years ago because of its natural beauty and still enjoy spending time outdoors as much as I can. I am a trained classical pianist and also play the cello. My focus is on heart rhythm problems. As a doctor, I work with patients to come up with a treatment plan that helps manage their condition. This may involve a cardiac ablation procedure or implantation of a pacemaker or defibrillator. As a researcher, I spend a good portion of my time looking at health disparities with the goal of improving access to high-quality health care for people of all races, genders and ages. I’ve been at Duke since 1999, when I started my residency. I decided to become a doctor because I had an interest in biology while I was in college. I chose cardiology because it is highly technical and gives me the chance to really get to know my patients over the course of treatment. Focusing on the heart also allows me to make a greater impact on health care, since heart disease is so common in the United States. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, including my two young children. Dr. Thomas is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Brugada Syndrome. He is also highly rated in 14 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Atrial Fibrillation, Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT), Ventricular Fibrillation, Cardiac Ablation, and Pacemaker Implantation.

I perform catheter ablation procedures, including minimally invasive catheter surgery, for these conditions. I also implant and manage devices, such as pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) pacemakers or defibrillators. I also evaluate patients for possible genetic causes for sudden cardiac arrest or arrhythmias. Collaborating with a genetic counselor specializing in cardiac disorders, I perform genetic testing for these conditions. I fell in love with cardiology early in my medical training when I saw a patient in the emergency department who came in with a heart attack. The cardiology team swooped down and took him away to a procedure room, and in less than 45 minutes the heart attack had been stopped, and the patient was asking if he could go home. I'm so happy to be on that team now. I have extensive experience in minimally invasive procedures to treat people with a myriad of cardiac conditions. Most commonly, you can find me in the cardiac catheterization laboratory opening blockages in the arteries that feed the heart to treat angina or stop heart attacks. In the hospital, I also see patients with other acute cardiac conditions. In the office, I see patients with the entire range of heart problems. I'm excited to be joining Duke because I'll also be able to get back to doing research aimed at improving our understanding and management of patients with heart disease at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. In addition, I love to teach and learn, and there is no better place than Duke to stoke the intellectual curiosity that brought me to medicine in the first place. What is the definition of Brugada Syndrome?

Brugada syndrome is a condition that causes a disruption of the heart's normal rhythm. Specifically, this disorder can lead to irregular heartbeats in the heart's lower chambers (ventricles), which is an abnormality called ventricular arrhythmia. If untreated, the irregular heartbeats can cause fainting (syncope), seizures, difficulty breathing, or sudden death. These complications typically occur when an affected person is resting or asleep.

When should I see a Brugada Syndrome doctor near Chapel Hill, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Brugada Syndrome doctor near Chapel Hill, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Brugada Syndrome doctors near Chapel Hill, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Brugada Syndrome doctors near Chapel Hill, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Brugada Syndrome doctor near Chapel Hill, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Brugada Syndrome doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Brugada Syndrome doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Brugada Syndrome doctor near Chapel Hill, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Brugada Syndrome doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Brugada Syndrome doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Brugada Syndrome doctors near Chapel Hill, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Brugada Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Brugada Syndrome doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Brugada Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
